Boxing Gloves, Bag Gloves Or MMA Gloves For Bag Work?
Bag gloves can really help your hands from getting torn up. The first time I trained on a sand bag I had bloody knuckles.
One thing to be stressed is that bag gloves are meant for training and not for use with an opponent. They are made with little padding and will not protect your partner.
It is up to you whether to use hand wraps. Just be sure to size your gloves accordingly. Heavier gloves will help condition you for the rigors of boxing.
Hand wraps will protect your wrists. You’ll need to work up to not using them however. The reason being-ground fighting. Once you go to the ground you need the mobility in your wrists.
Traditional Boxing Gloves
It is up to you whether to use boxing gloves for a heavy bag workout or to use bag gloves. There are pros and cons to both.
Although it is alright to use 16 ounce gloves on the bag, it will wear and tear your gloves. That is a plus for using bag gloves.
Using heavy bag gloves provides wrist support to help prevent injuries. They are made of leather or vinyl and look like mittens and have some padding on the knuckles.
Construction
Of course it is not to say that you have complete protection, but they do certainly cut down to risk of injury.
The heavy bag is designed to optimize power and endurance so that is why it has little give. Therefore, you will need to be able to hit the bag with force and not worry about getting injured.
The heavy bag is hard. It is heavy. You need to hit it hard. It does not give, so you need to be able to punch hard without fear of getting hurt.
Other Workouts
Bag gloves are useful for other workouts too such as hitting the double end bag or focus mitts. They cannot be used for sparring, however because they are too light to be safe.
Do not use MMA gloves on the heavy bag unless you want to replace them soon. You’ll end up wearing out the gloves quickly and risking hurting your fingers. MMA gloves are not a good choice.
What To Purchase
When purchasing heavy get the ones with the most adequate protection. Avoid the ultra-thin ones as they just do not offer enough support.
They simply do not provide the protection that you need. Heavier and more durable bag gloves produced by name brands are most definitely what you should look for instead as these are the top items to wear.
I recommend the UFC heavy bag gloves, the Century heavy bag gloves and Bad Boy heavy bag gloves. I have had experience with all of these, and you could choose any of these with confidence.
